Maialino's late night special burger
Maialino's Late Night Special Burger
January 22nd, 2015 @ 05:30 PM

Event Description

Happy New Year you beautiful people - 2015 is going to be be a big year for us all, and so I’d like to kick it off with something exciting and different:

An exclusive, clandestine, late-night-only Burger Club session at top-notch Gramercy eating establishment Maialino.

This is big, people. We've got an in through one of our esteemed members, giving us access to a burger which isn't on the menu, and is only served after 10:30PM.

So we're booked in for Thursday, January 22nd at 10:30PM, and we've only got 10 spots available, so I'll go with the first folks who respond to this in the affirmative. If there's overwhelming demand then maybe we can look at a second session later on down the line...

I'm looking forward to this new and exciting experience for our merry band of cattle-consuming connoisseurs.

Andrew's review

As I admire the beauty of newfallen snow while softly cursing DiBlasio’s ban on late-night food delivery, I think back on this past Thursday…’twas a special evening indeed. A salty dozen of us gathered for a lovely late-night burger session at the fine-dining establishment Maialino, thanks to club member Corey.

This was a special burger - something different and unexpected. It was a clear triumph of creativity and careful experimentation - as reflected in the sky-high harmoniousness and toppings ratings. The combination of gorgonzola, escarole and house-made pepper pancetta, coupled with a prime beef blend and a brioche bun, made for a balanced and palate-stimulating burst of flavor in each bite. The venue itself also has a finely-tuned elegance, and our group table in the center of it all was just the right blend of casual yet refined.

That said, some folks were critical of the toppings - no matter how delicious they were - and how they could overwhelm the flavor of the beef, while others weren’t a fan of the brioche bun’s texture. Sides were sharply divisive as well - the burger itself comes with only a few picked veggies (similar to The NoMad), but the inexpensive small plates we ordered following the burgers (more on my organization later…) were quite fantastic in their own right - chicken hearts, pork cracklin', fried baby artichokes and a glorious paté…yet some just wanted a traditional helping of fries to wash down their beef, and felt it should’ve been handed down alongside the patty. Value assessments fell along similar lines - $15 a fine price for a burger, though the lack of sides meant some felt cheated of a full meal. That said, the $5 beers and $8 cocktails were a bargain in any economic climate...

Sadly, while the world markets fluctuate, my rating as a human being remains right around the same low-water mark - this time ‘round hovering at 3.7. There were mixed reviews of my hat - some criticized it as a poor man’s beret, while others appreciated it’s Mighty Mighty Bosstones-esque retro flair. There were harsh words about my lack of organization in coordinating the ordering of sides long after the burgers had come and gone, and Alissa found my “desperate approval-seeking” to border on distasteful…so thanks for that constructive criticism guys. However one point of clarification I’d just like to make in closing is that the official name for this burger is the "Late Night Burger,” not the “Andrew Sucks Burger” as several folks mistakenly posited...

Andrew's desperation for approval benefitted him only because it made him order all the sides. ALL THE (Fancy as Fuck) SIDES! #blessed Yet still 3.1

The harmoniousness is killer on this burger. I wish I could taste more of the meat in the burger but the quality of the toppings make me want to be less of a greedy man.

Now let's talk about Andrew. As a person, he always gets a solid 6.5 from me. My own father is an 8 so take the goddamn compliment. His organization takes a big hit this week due to his late ordering of the "sides" which we decided were more apps than anything else, although they were delicious. Andrew's organization gets a 1. He got people here. Big fucking deal, Andrew. I have email too.

The sides were appetizers, but the mustard was subtle. Too much hype, but the cracklin actually crackled. When the seagulls follow the trawler it's because they expect the fish to be thrown back into the ocean.

Why is Andrew wearing a beret inside the restaurant? I thought we were in America

Great burger. Still hate brioche buns. Andrew remains excellent, remiss me of the dancing guy for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, so dilligent in rallying the crowd

The burger was a fair stab at making a Burger. The touch of Gorgonzola was appreciated as it should. Though I feel pleased and cheated at the same time regarding the sides, I would have liked some fries to burry the burger :(

Andrew gets a stellar 7 today. Just because of the French hat.

First off, Andrew is delicious, but not eatable by normal social standards... Aside from that, the combination of flavors were very well done. The sweetness of the brioche bun was offset by the bitterness of the escarole and the creamy saltiness of the Gorgonzola was a perfect match and the black pepper pancetta was a nice snappy element... As far as side choice orders go... Old fashions are not a side... Nor are chicken hearts... But are awesome in real life
